It's Holiday reset time! With the abundance of food, family, and fun coming to the table this holiday season, I want to get in as much nutrition as I can. This Daily Elixir is my favorite way to give a nutritional punch to my gut health. OK, maybe gut punch doesn't sound very appealing... should we just call it a miracle worker instead? Starting your day with a little self-care goes a long way for your body and your mind. Start today, right now, by learning the benefits of this simple tonic.

Apple Cider Vinegar isn't just a sweet and tangy ingredient for dressings and pickles... It's a fermented liquid that has been proven to positively benefit your gut health as well as other parts of your body. I am by no means a doctor and I am not trying to sell you on anything. But this stuff really works wonders for your body. Here are some of the benefits:

Soothes digestion

equalizes stomach acid

lowers blood sugar and cholesterol

If you are thinking these are all old wives tales and myths... I encourage you to keep an open mind. I too thought this way in the beginning. But then I though, how could it be that there are SO many stories of peoples success with ACV? Stories with results...? 

We have a funny family history with ACV... my mother in law was the first to be convinced by its healing powers. She swore drinking a bit of raw ACV with lemon in water was the key to her success in weight control and could ward off the common colds that are often spread around her work place. She led by example, bought this stuff in bulk, and turned the rest of her family on to the craze. Sean spent years drinking a splash of ACV in water any time I was sick and spreading germs around the house. And often times even drinking it to recover from being sick himself or having indulged in a little too much partying or binging some questionable foods. Then there was me... telling them to stop trying to induct me into their "Apple Cider Vinegar Cult" because my seriously sensitive stomach couldn't bare the thought of what it may possibly do. Boy was I wrong...

 

When my Gastroenterologist told me that I should be drinking lemon water with apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach daily I told him he was crazy. "My overly sensitive stomach cant even handle a plain yogurt in the morning let alone the acidity of lemon juice!" I personally started feeling the positive effects of ACV when I was just using it in my cooking. I always use it in my favorite sweet and sour pickle recipe which I am often eating out of the jar like a snack. Of course it is a main contender for salad dressings and dipping sauces. I even splash it into my BBQ pulled pork. Whenever I use fermented products my gut feels a sort of ease that I never expected. Almost as if I can feel the good little bacteria fighting all the harmful bacteria out of my system. I try to pack on as many fermented products as possible, sneaking homemade saurkraut, fermented ginger carrots, or fermented yogurt cheese any where I can. 

So after many days of dread, I splashed fresh lemon juice and a little ACV in some water and tried to gulp it down. expecting to feel instantiations stomach pain, I waited. To my ultimate surprise I actually felt relief to my nausea between meals and saw a big improvement to my chronic stomach pain. He was right. My mother in law was right. Sean was right. So I have been drinking it ever since.

Mixing my lemon and apple cider vinegar with Blackstrap molasses wasn't just for taste. Did you know that molasses is a bi product of refining sugar cane? Now I know what you are thinking, sugar is bad, molasses must be worst. WRONG. Sugar is boiled once to make cane syrup, when boiled the second time it created molasses. The third and final boil creates Blackstrap molasses. Blackstrap has the lowest sugar content of any sugar cane product and the highest vitamin and mineral makeup. It is fortified with;

Iron

Calcium

Potassium

Magnesium

Vitamin B

Selenium

and lots of antioxidants

 

Magnesium is another super beneficial substance for anyone with gut issues since it regulates your bowels. Blackstrap molasses has also been proven to;

be great for your blood and bones

Daily Elixir

The key to my morning routine

 

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 Tablespoon Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (with "the mother")

  • 1 to 2 Tablespoons Blackstrap Molasses

  • 1/2 Lemon (freshly squeezed)

  • 8 oz Cold Water

  • Ice for serving

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Combine Apple Cider Vinegar, Molasses, and Lemon in a glass.

  2. Stir in water.

  3. Enjoy over ice.

NOTES

For best results drink 1-2x a day on an empty stomach

COOKING TIPS

Recipes are never rules!

Use your judgment; if you've made it before and it has worked by shaking not stirring, try it! If the recipe says something will brown after 12 minutes in the oven and your's hasn't browned yet, leave it until you think its brown enough.

Taste, taste, taste!

Any good chef will tell you to taste your food multiple times as you cook. Stick your spoon in and see if it tastes good. Is your food seasoned well? Can it use more salt or pepper? Would you like it if it were a bit sweeter? Everyone's palate is different, if you think it needs something; Go for it!
